With the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic and remote work, computer sales have grown. According to a survey by IDC (International Data Corporation) made globally, the Chromebooks from manufacturers like HP, Acer, Asus, Dell and Lenovo outsold Macs (desktops and MacBooks) for the first time over the past year.
No surprises, Windows dominated and took first place in the total market. Apple and Google were virtually tied with the same percentage of sales in the first quarter of 2020. However, demand for Chromebooks began to soar in the second quarter (when the pandemic gained strength), surpassing sales of Macs.
Numbers
In the annual comparison, the numbers show that Chromebooks had 10,8% of the desktop and notebook market share, compared to the 7,5% achieved by devices from Apple. Despite its absolute leadership, Windows showed a significant drop.

IDC data showed that in 2020, Windows reached 80,5% of the market, with a drop of 4,9 points compared to 2019, when it reached 85,4% of total demand. In the same scenario, Chrome OS showed an increase of 4,4 points (from 6,4% to 10,8%), while MacOS grew by 0,8 points (from 6,7% to 7,5%).
The pandemic is in fact accelerating the demand for technological devices. This is because Chrome OS is gaining more and more space. The same can be said of Mac devices. Apple which also tend to grow, but at a slower pace due to the values. However, the case is completely the opposite when it comes to Windows, which with each passing year, shows a drop in market share.
Thus, it can be said that Chromebooks are occupying a good part of the low-cost laptop market, which at least until now, continues to be dominated by Windows.
