Hard face: Samsung tells jury that Galaxy S7 is not a cell phone

March 31th, 2021

If you think there are no limits to shamelessness, you haven't seen what Samsung did in South Africa. The company claimed in court that Galaxy S7 It is not a cell phone to get a tax refund. All this because, in South Africa, smartphones are considered luxury goods and, therefore, have a higher tax burden.

Samsung wanted a discount and, if successful, the return of the extra taxes that had already been paid on the Galaxy S7. Samsung's strategy was to convince the court that its device should not be classified as a cell phone, but rather in the category of laptops and PCs, since it has versatile functions, such as playing media, running apps and games, and browsing the Internet.

Interestingly, the South Korean company even brought an IT expert to court to argue with jurors that voice calls are not the main purpose of the smartphone model, but rather connectivity to the internet, apps, social media, games and music.

It didn't work

However, the move did not have the effect Samsung expected and the company ended up losing the legal dispute.

In response to the South Korean manufacturer's argument, the body responsible for South African tariffs made a point of highlighting some features of the Galaxy S7 that give it the attributes of a smartphone.

It has been claimed, for example, that the Galaxy S7 is a cell phone because it is small enough to be carried in the hand, has the speaker and microphone in the same positions as a phone, has a SIM card slot, and has the ability to make, receive, and end calls.

Samsung tried, but this time the taxes didn't go back into their pockets.
