Google announced on Wednesday (03/02) that its new submarine cable connecting Europe to the US is now in operation. The route of Google's submarine cable runs from the coast of the city of Virginia Beach, in the United States, to the French Atlantic coast. Announced in 2019, the “Dunant” submarine cable received this nnamed after Henry Dunant, founder of the Red Cross and the first recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize.
The submarine cable was developed in cooperation with telecommunications equipment company SubCom, and will significantly improve interconnection with other network infrastructure in the region, providing record capacity. In addition, the submarine cable from Google should also help to meet the growing demand for cloud services.
250 Tbps per second across the Atlantic Ocean
The submarine cable of the Google has the edge by not relying on pump lasers to amplify each fiber pair as data travels through it. Instead, SDM technology allows pump lasers and other optical components to be shared across multiple fiber pairs.
Google believes the new cable will substantially improve its cloud capabilities, enabling more customers to build innovative applications that work in a variety of environments.
“Dunant is the first cable “The long-distance submarine will feature a 12-fiber pair spatial division multiplexing (SDM) design and will deliver a record capacity of 250 Tbps (terabits) per second across the Atlantic Ocean. That’s enough to transmit the entire digitized material in the U.S. Library of Congress three times every second,” said Chris Ciauri, president of EMEA at Google Cloud.
“Increased cable capacity is delivered cost-effectively with additional fiber pairs (twelve, versus six or eight in previous generations of submarine cables) and power-optimized repeater designs.”

With Dunant now operational, Google's next undersea cable to be launched will be the Corporal Grace Hopper between New York and Europe, with landing sites in Bilbao, Spain and Bude, UK. Google announced this new cable, which it is also building in partnership with SubCom, last July. It is expected to be activated in 2022, with a total of 16 fiber optic pairs.
Additionally, Google is also building the Equian Cape, which connects South Africa and Portugal. This submarine cable should be operational later this year.
