Watch another hands-on video with Oppo's expandable screen phone

Do you also dream of the day when flexible smartphones will be affordable and found on the shelves of every store? While this is still a distant dream, a Chinese company is taking this segment one step further: a video reveals the technology of expandable screen from Oppo, which can make flexible products much more practical.

Many patents have already demonstrated how this would work in theory, and LG — which could be one of the first manufacturers to introduce a model of this type — must jump out of this boat. Thus, Oppo becomes the center of attention with a smartphone that compactly has a 6,7-inch screen, but when stretched becomes a 7,4” tablet.

The magic behind it all

Stretchable screen technology may seem like magic, but it's not really that mysterious: the flexible display actually unfolds from an internal mechanism, offering a larger portion of the screen for use. In the video of Oppo's expandable screen prototype, you need to drag the power button up for the screen to automatically expand, and dragging it down for the mechanism to retract. You can also force the screen to collapse by simply applying pressure to both edges of the phone.

According to the video, Oppo says the technology has the potential to keep the display usable for around 100 unrolls. That's the same rate that Samsung, Huawei and others estimate their flexible displays can be folded. Since it's a prototype, it lacks features that are interesting to the end user, such as a selfie camera.

In the future, Oppo intends to have its expandable display lock at any size between 6,7 and 7,4 inches, so that users can watch videos on most screen formats on the market without black bars. Unfortunately, there is still a long way to go before the domestic market finds something like this available, and well, when that happens, the prices will not be at all affordable.
