Apple makes $10,3 billion in subscriptions across top 100 iOS apps

Um Sensor Tower report revealed that iOS users paid a total of $10,3 billion for apps in the top 100 subscriptions list last year, excluding games. The annual growth represents a 32% increase over 2019, which saw a profit of $7,8 billion.

The overall number of subscriptions to paid apps has grown significantly. In the same period, global consumption in the sector increased by 34%, rising from 9,7 billion in 2019 to 13 billion. This revenue corresponds to a significant share (11,7%) of the earnings in the in-app purchasing segment, which raised a total of US$ 111 billion between microtransactions and other paid features.

Google, on the other hand, had a more modest profit than Apple in app subscriptions, earning “only” US$2,7 billion in 2020. The figure corresponds to a 42% increase compared to 2019, of US$1,9 billion. However, Alphabet came out on top when it comes to profit per app. YouTube was the service with the highest revenue in subscriptions, receiving a total of US$991,7 million.

New forms of consumption

The subscription model has proven to be exceptionally profitable for the Apple, since many of their apps offer free trial periods on iOS, engaging their users.

Other Sensor Tower report pointed out consumer trends for the mobile world in 2021, indicating that eight of the fifteen most profitable games in virtual stores operate on a subscription basis. The trend was evident even before the Covid-19 pandemic, as streaming services for series and music, which offer similar models.

This could mean a paradigm shift for companies, which could offer unique services based on the new consumption pattern. Twitter, for example, may be studying how include paid content on your platform. While the Apple, the greatest example of success in implementing this software sales model, can implement something similar now in hardware, for a recurring exchange from your devices.
