Apple is expected to enter the foldable screen market in 2023; Google, Oppo, Vivo and Xiaomi may launch models soon

June 15th, 2021

The latest report DSCC released this Monday (14) brought some predictions about the future of devices with foldable screens. The main one is that the Apple should enter this segment only in 2023. Google, Oppo, Vivo and Xiaomi are expected to launch new devices soon, using Samsung flexible displays.

The report indicates that Corning will supply the bendable glass for the Samsung Galaxy 3 Flip's display. The product uses a new technology to allow the display to be both strong and flexible. It turns out that Corning is also a major supplier of the Apple, which could help the iPhone maker enter the market. It makes perfect sense that the long-standing partnership between the two brands will be maintained in the foldable screen market.

Foldable screens in the coming years

The document also says that Samsung Display has created a new model of foldable screens with a more economical format, which could help meet the high demand that the company must have to supply the equipment to third-party companies. As we have already mentioned, Google, Oppo, Vivo and Xiaomi are expected to launch products with flexible screens from Samsung by the end of this year, so investment in this sector is guaranteed.

According to the report, the first foldable screen with a camera under the panel is in development. In addition, a new color filter system should be able to reduce the thickness of these displays.

Demand for foldable/flexible displays expected to increase by 2025

DSCC forecasts that demand for foldable screens is expected to grow by around 87% between 2022 and 2025. Most of these devices are expected to be smartphones and tablets. In the case of notebooks, the sector still needs to adapt after Microsoft canceled Windows 10X. Flexible TVs are expected to remain a premium product, largely due to the high cost of a larger screen.
