Android Auto has wallpaper and the return of Assistant routines

February 15, 2021

Android Auto will allow users to change the system wallpaper. The update, which should come via the server or via version 6.1 of the app, has already been noticed by users on Reddit and also brings back Google Assistant Routines, a feature that hasn't been supported since 2018.

O Vida Celular had already anticipated the possibility of replacing the wallpaper in Android Auto. To do so, the user must go to General Settings and select Choose wallpaper. There, it will be possible to choose between 12 types of wallpapers.

Most wallpapers come in dark, smoky tones; others feature landscapes and images inspired by textures reminiscent of a vehicle's interior, such as stitched leather and carbon fiber. Functionality follows the movement of the Apple CarPlay, which already offers this feature to its users.

Assistant Returns

As you can see in the image below, Google Assistant routines will also be back on Android Auto. They can be configured as shortcuts on the home screen and added via apps on the smartphone. In the general settings menu, the user just needs to select Customize Home Screen; from there, it is already possible to add an action for the Assistant, such as opening the garage or programming a route back home.

It is not yet known why Google Assistant is returning. It is speculated that the manufacturer's recent agreement with Ford e the announcement of the integration of Android Auto into the SmartThings ecosystem, from Samsung, are some of the justifications.

For now, Google has not officially announced the changes.
