AirPods Max don't need a case to preserve battery

December 18, 2020

Ten days later the launch, Apple already receive the first complaints about the AirPods Max, especially regarding battery capacity. And to address the rumors, the Cupertino company has updated the device's support page, describing how to proceed to save the device's energy.

A Apple claims that the AirPods Max, when stored in the case (aka “bra”), enter an “ultra low power” mode that preserves battery charge. This, however, was not the experience of Marques Brownlee from MKBHD channel, who observed significant battery loss when the earbuds were idle and outside the smart case.

Trying to resolve the impasse, the Apple clarified that AirPods Max enter low power mode as soon as the user removes the device from their ear and leaves it in a resting position for five minutes. Only when they remain in this state for 72 hours, the “ultra low power” mode is activated. From that point on, features such as Bluetooth and location tracking are disabled.

Case has its limitations

Smart case ("bra") for AirPods Max

According to a The Verge, the surprise is that the “bra” does not immediately activate the advanced sleep mode. First, the AirPods Max enter low power and, only after 18 hours, in “ultra low” mode. The Apple It also doesn't mention the fact that the headphones have to be in the sleeping position to enter this mode, nor the 24-hour duration for the AirPods Max to maximize the battery.

Apparently, the Apple prioritizes the speed of reconnecting the headphones over saving battery. One question remains: what characterizes the resting position for the headphones? For example, if they are inactive, but wrapped around the neck, does the low power mode activate? Maybe the Apple need to adjust these things through firmware updates, but the truth is that the AirPods Max hype has worked: the devices are sold out on the United States website. In Brazil, the headphones are not yet available, but when they arrive, will cost a lot.
