Zoom CEO transferred 40% of his shares. To whom?

March 9th, 2021

Chinese businessman Eric Yuan, CEO of video conferencing platform Zoom, has transferred 40% of his actions linked to the company. Currently, this amount is quoted at US$ 6 billion, which means approximately R$ 35 billion, and the transfer was made in two installments. However, the beneficiary of the transfer was not identified in the documents of this movement.

According to a representative of the platform, Yuan transferred the shares he had in Zoom to an investment in assets belonging to the businessman's family. He added that "the distribution of the shares was made within the terms of trust between Yuan and his wife." However, the representative's defense does not help to clarify the situation or point out real beneficiaries.

Effects on the stock market

With the advance (and current extension) of the coronavirus pandemic, Zoom saw its shares soar like never before. The videoconferencing platform, which emerged in 2012 to compete with Skype and other apps, was adopted by several companies for meetings, served as a space for classes and even served as a place for online parties during social isolation. As a result, its value grew by 400% in the last year alone. Today, the company's shares, in total, are worth US$100 billion, with Yuan's stake worth US$13,7 billion.

In a report for the BBC, market analyst Edward Moya said that the transfer of shares could be viewed negatively, as the market could become apprehensive if it does not know who benefited from it. “Yuan is only 51 years old, married and has three children, so this act could be seen as hasty,” he concluded.

The effects of Yuan's move have not yet been measured, as there is no news yet on how shareholders reacted to the fact. Zoom, in fact, plans to grow by 40% this year. However, the company's analysis was made before the event.
