An article recent published by researchers at Purdue University, located in the US state of Indiana, tried to determine how much battery night mode saves on smartphones with OLED screens, majority share of the market today. This type of fabric, in fact, was chosen not only for its popularity, but also for providing lower battery consumption naturally, thanks to its own operation.
But, of course, the screen doesn't do this alone. Apps need to be properly optimized for the OLED's economic effect to occur. In addition, another notably impactful factor on the battery that was considered in the research is screen brightness. So, it remained to test how the different variables would behave together.
So the study chose six popular apps, including Google Maps and YouTube, for testing. Smartphones with Android interfaces very close to the original Android were also chosen, such as the phones in the pixel and the Moto Z3.
What could be concluded?
Researchers Pranab Dash and Yu Charlie Hu, who wrote the paper, concluded that night mode does indeed save battery efficiently. However, the amount of battery saved varies greatly depending on the brightness of the screen. For example, with screen brightness levels between 30% and 50%, night mode managed to reduce total battery consumption by 9%.
But it was with the screen brightness at maximum, that is, at 100%, that night mode really managed to surprise. According to the study, in this situation, battery savings reach 47% on average. This means that when using night mode in a well-lit place, your battery can last up to twice as long as it would with night mode turned off.

As you can see above, power consumption varies greatly depending on whether or not night mode is on. The tool used to measure this battery efficiency was developed by the researchers themselves and is called Android Battery+. According to Dash and Hu, it will be available soon so that developers can estimate the power consumption of their apps and optimize them accordingly.
