The data of IDC (International Data Corporation) research, released this Friday (30/07) pointed to year-over-year growth in the global market for Chromebooks and tablets during the second quarter of 2021. In addition, IDC also pointed out the growth of the smartphone market in the same period.

According to the research, with 12,3 million units sold, shipments of Chromebooks grew 68,6% year-on-year. Sales of tablets, grew 4,2% year-on-year, with more than 40,5 million units sold in the second quarter of this year.

The leading companies in the Chromebook and tablet market

With a 35% share and 115,7% year-over-year growth in the Chromebook market, HP takes the top spot on the list. Next, Lenovo has a 21% share and 81,2% year-over-year growth. The list also has Acer in third place, Dell in fourth and Samsung last (in addition to the other companies) to form the total average.

In the tablet sector, Apple leads with 31,9% of the market and a growth of 3,5% year-on-year, followed by Samsung, which has a 19,6% share of sales in the second half of 2021 and has a year-on-year growth of 13,3%. In fact, it is worth mentioning that Samsung is present in both lists (tablets and Chromebooks), as is Lenovo.

Furthermore, it is worth noting that, as the Huawei sold its subsidiary Honor At the end of last year, the data was updated (with and without the participation of Honor shipments).

Chromebook and tablet market growth gained momentum during remote classes

Speaking about this data, Anuroopa Nataraj, senior research analyst at IDC’s Mobility and Consumer Device Trackers, revealed that growth has gained momentum in remote classes, as many Chromebooks and tablets have been used as study tools by students across the world. “Online learning has gained momentum and has driven the digital revolution in the learning space,” said Nataraj.

The analyst also said that there is a greater demand for tablets in emerging countries. On the other hand, Nataraj pointed out that “schools in some developed markets, such as the US and Canada, are leaning more towards Chromebooks”.
