It's really annoying when you get added to a group of WhatsApp without your permission, by people you don't even know well. Or, when they put you in a group with people you don't like or with relatives so far away that we don't even remember their faces. But, what few people know is that the app offers an option that can save you the time of leaving unwanted groups.
With that in mind, I’ve put together a tip to help you avoid these groups and stop being labeled as the “annoying guy” who leaves every group. Check out how to avoid being put in a random WhatsApp group without your permission.
Configure who is allowed to add you to a WhatsApp group
- The first step is to open WhatsApp.
- With the app open, tap the three dots in the top right corner of the screen and select the option "Settings".
- Once done, access the option “Account” and then tap “Privacy”.
- Already in the tab of “Privacy”, go to “Groups”.
- When this page opens, WhatsApp will ask who can add you to groups. So, tap on the option "My Contacts" and then in "Ok". See the example images below:

That's it, you can only be added to groups by people you have in your phone's contact list. By selecting this option, people who have your number in their contact list will not be able to add you to groups unless you add them to your list as well.
Other privacy options
In addition to choosing the option to allow only your contacts to add you to WhatsApp groups, you have two other options. The standard option, in which everyone who has your number can add you, even if you haven't added them. And the more specific alternative, in which you make a selection within your WhatsApp contact list, so you can define who among your contacts can add you to a group, not giving permission to some people (those you don't have much contact with, but that you have on your list).
