Google is really willing to enter the foldable market and, to do so, it plans to introduce the Pixel Fold to the world by the end of this year. The news was leaked this Wednesday (14/07) in the local media. The Elec, confirming what has already was being commented on about the smartphone since May this year.
According to new information, Google closed with Samsung the purchase of glass with UTG (ultra-thin) technology, especially for the production of the foldable phone, which will have a 7,6-inch screen. The new data indicates that the Pixel Fold will effectively be Google's main novelty in the 4th quarter of this year, that is, it will be made public between October and December.
Samsung's ultra-thin glass (UTG) technology was previously reserved for Samsung Electronics, but the display company has decided to sell UTG to other mobile device makers to strengthen its business.
Strong competition
When (and if) it actually hits the market in 2021, the Google Pixel Fold will have some stiff competition ahead of it. Until then, the new generations of the Samsung foldables, Galaxy Fold 3 and Flip 3, as well as new products that have been worked on by other Chinese brands. Among them, we can mention the Mi Mix Fold 2, from Xiaomi, which will also have ultra-thin glass from Samsung, and smartphones from Vivo Global, Oppo and Honor, all in the development phase.
What has already been said about the Pixel Fold, by Dave Burke himself, Google's vice president of engineering, is that the development and optimization of applications for phones with larger screens, and also with foldable screens, have been encouraged since the announcement of Android 12, back in February of this year. It could be a clamshell or book-shaped device, but the same size as the Galaxy Z Fold 2, as projected by the guys at MacRumors, in a render in February.
