YouTube's home page is highly sought after by advertisers, as it is the user's first contact with the platform. A horizontal banner can fill the first space on the interface after the search bar. But companies interested in it will no longer be able to insert political or other restricted category advertisements.

In a statement, Google's video platform said it will no longer allow political, drug-related, alcohol-related or gambling-related ads to appear on YouTube's most prominent format. The concern is that the format attracts too much attention and generates repercussions, and so the service wants to limit which topics can take advantage of this.

The new restrictions on YouTube ads are already in effect and, in addition to removing political formats — which include electoral campaigns — they also restrict smartphone games classified as online gambling titles, offline gambling games, or virtual casino platforms. Alcoholic beverages are also banned from now on, as well as advertising for medicines that encourage their consumption.

It is worth remembering that the new restrictions only affect the ad format on the YouTube homepage, both in the app and on the website. The platform offers a series of other channels — such as advertising before videos — that are still exploitable by companies in these sectors. Those who simply do not want to come across advertising can subscribe to YouTube Premium.

While it tinkers with YouTube's political and other ads, Google is also making efforts to Shorts win the world: the beta phase of the product has reached more countries — including Brazil. YouTube's TikTok, the product already allows reuse audios, a function also replicated in Instagram Shorts.
