Compared to the Android universe, the Apple still delivers a much larger amount of system updates for iPhones than the competition. With iOS 15, the company will take the iPhone 6s into its sixth year of support, and will still continue to provide security updates for iOS 14. Today (14/06) the company remembers the existence of iOS 12, which is also receiving another update.
iOS 12 was released in 2018 and was the last update for the iPhone 5s and iPhone 6, released in 2013 and 2014 respectively. Now, however, it receives version 12.5.4 of the operating system. This is due to security issues found by the company in the OS. There are three flaws that allow malicious users to exploit the devices. One involves gaps in the memory of compatible devices, and two others involve WebKit — the content rendering engine of internet browsers.
iPhone 5s reaches eight years of support
Thus, this is the fourth iOS 12 update only in 2021: in January, March and May the system also underwent updates. But it is worth noting that these updates only include bug fixes and loopholes, without adding new features visible to the user. In other words, these users will not receive Focus mode, improvements to the Apple Card, and even any other functions that were exclusive to OS versions 13 and 14.
Interestingly, iOS 13 is not expected to receive any further updates. This is because all devices compatible with the system are also running iOS 14 (and 15), and only from the 2020 firmware onwards will it be possible to remain on an old version — with security patches — even if a more advanced one is available. With the attention given to iOS 12, the iPhone 5s reaches a respectable eight years of software support, and the iPhone 6 seven. Apple congratulations on this stance, and your users are grateful.
