Ming-Chi Kuo, one of the world's most important analysts when it comes to Apple, reiterated on Tuesday (07/06) a launch schedule for the company's augmented reality (AR) headset. Following in tune with what has been observed about a possible debut date for the device, Kuo says that Apple's AR HMD (augmented reality head-mounted display) will be presented in the second quarter of 2022.

Kuo's report focuses on prospects for a key supplier of Apple for the headset: Genius Electronic Optical. This company, in partnership with Young Optics, should supply the lenses “Hybrid Fresnel”, which seek to offer quality and optical performance, while keeping the weight of the devices below 150 grams. These lenses, patented by Facebook, are used in the competent Oculus Quest, belonging to Mark Zuckerberg's company.

Kuo conducted research covering the supply chain of camera lenses in Apple, where he indicated that Genius will be responsible for 65 to 70% of shipments of this type of components for Apple devices. This prospecting included the lenses for the upcoming iPhone 13. Taiwan-based supplier Largan Precision typically handles a significant portion of iPhone lens orders. However, the company failed to meet the company's quality control requirements. Apple and was instructed to stop production in June. Its compatriot Genius, on the other hand, complied with these requirements and should be the sole supplier of wide-angle and telephoto lenses for Apple's phones, at least for this month.

AR Headset from Apple must have 15 cameras

In March, Kuo reported that the headset Apple must have a system with 15 cameras. In addition to Genius, Largan is listed as one of the suppliers of lenses for the device. That month, the analyst had stated that the device will provide users with “an immersive experience that is significantly better than existing virtual reality products”.

However, until the second quarter of 2022 arrives, we will have to wait for new information about Apple's AR headset, including its price, which could be a little beyond affordable. If we follow March's expectations, we could see the device costing around US$ 1 (approximately R$ 5.027, without taking into account the differences in taxes and fees). However, there are those who point out a commercial value of US$3 for each headset unit, which means more than R$15 in Brazilian currency.
