Tinder announced last Thursday (20/05) a measure to reduce the number of inappropriate messages sent on the platform. It is a feature called “Are You Sure?”, a message that will appear on the user’s screen every time the app detects the presence of inappropriate language in the chat. In the first tests of the feature, the company says it has “reduced inappropriate language by more than 10%”.
Tinder's inappropriate message detection system works with the help of artificial intelligence. The company's executives hope to create an environment that provides less invasive situations in social interactions.
“Words are just as powerful as actions, and today we’re taking an even stronger stance that harassment has no place on Tinder,” said Tracey Breeden, head of safety and advocacy at Match Group, the company that owns the app. “The early results show us that intervention done in the right way really goes a long way in changing behavior and building a community where everyone feels like they can be themselves.”
Fight against harassment
The inappropriate messages feature echoes a series of measures that Tinder has implemented in recent years to combat harassment situations on the app. For example, the company already has a “Does This Bother You?” feature, which flags potentially offensive messages and encourages users to report inappropriate behavior on the platform.
In March, Tinder also teamed up with women-led nonprofit Garbo and introduced a feature that checks criminal background history of anyone registered on the app. The system tracks users who have already been reported for violence, abusive behavior, harassment and restrictive measures.
