All about the best cell phones

While fans count down the days until they finally get to officially meet the new generations of the Z Fold and Z Flip, Samsung is planning to launch a new member of the 'Z' line. The Roll, however, would not be foldable, like the models that will arrive in August, but rather a retractable cell phone.

According to the folks at the Dutch website LetsGoDigital, Samsung has already applied for a patent with the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO), along with the trademark Z Roll. The name, by the way, says it all. According to the patent, the Galaxy Roll is a cell phone with a retractable screen, which Samsung wants to put in stores (and in people's hands) in 2022.

The idea of the retractable screen suggests that, when pulled to the right, it expands its area by up to 30%, displaying system icons or, simply, messages from a chat application, such as WhatsApp, Telegram or Discord. Samsung is expected to release more details about the Galaxy Z Roll at the unpacked event for the new generations of Flip and Fold, in August, but nothing official has been said about it so far.

Old idea

The idea of launching a retractable cell phone on the market has been permeating the minds of executives and developers since 2019 and, in 2022, it could become a reality with the Galaxy Z Roll. The website LetsGoDigital itself tracked, two years ago, a patent indicating a cell phone from the South Korean brand that would also be expandable to the sides, but the idea did not flourish.

Now, however, it seems that the dream could become a reality, but only in 2022. It remains to be seen whether Samsung and the Galaxy Z Roll with a retractable screen will reach the market before the already rumored Oppo X 2021, which already has up to videos circulating, showing the Chinese brand's future smartphone in operation. We'll just have to wait and see.
