Google is working on a new update to the Android emoji package. Among the new features, the handshake emoji is expected to get a 25 variations with different colors that represent a plurality of skin tones in the world, as the company reported on its blog. The feature is expected to arrive on smartphones in 2022.
Creating an emoji is more complex than it seems. In addition to being universal signs, based on the Unicode language, which allows it to be identified by most of the languages available on Android, each sticker receives a specific coding to display the color variation required by the user. Google takes this task very seriously which even has a department for creating emojis.
Emoji has been in development since 2019
According to Jennifer Daniel, director of the industry, the handshake emoji with varying colors has been in development since 2019. The process involves varying different skin tones on the left hand and different skin tones on the right hand.

According to the professional, the expansion of colors seeks to give the sticker a general concept of unity with both sides reaching an agreement. Updates that seek representation through skin tones and gender representation are a priority for Google's development teams. Last year, for example, Gboard received an update that makes it easier to select an emoji in other colors. Simply hold your finger on the desired sticker and it will open the skin tone variations.
Furthermore, by default, the next time the user searches for the sticker, they will find it with the last skin tone used.
The new handshake emoji is expected to arrive on Android with Unicode 14, both were scheduled for 2021 but were delayed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
