Analyzing the game's programming code, the Reddit user team Pokeminers found a new function for the Pokémon Go called Routes. According to the analysis, the feature will be a way for coaches to help expand the virtual mapping of real-world locations into the game. As the folks at SlashGear pointed out, Routes could bring Pokémon Go back to the height of popularity it enjoyed when it launched in 2016.

The analysis showed that each route will have a name, description, and creator's name. In addition to creating their own route, trainers will be able to explore routes created by others, passing through a series of pokestops and gyms. Completing routes will earn them prizes and versions. According to the code, Routes in Pokémon Go will have a set period of time before they expire, and trainers will have to wait a certain amount of time after completing a route to begin exploring another. It will also be possible to track their progress through a route.

Gyms and special pokestops on routes will be able to help hatch shiny Pokémon, users will be able to rate routes up to five stars, and buddy Pokémon will be able to find new routes for the trainer in the same way they find pokestops, according to the analysis.

The Pokeminers team also found the soundtrack and charts for Routes, which they say indicates that the feature should be released in the app soon. The new feature comes on the heels of biggest update made in the game since 2016, Beyond Go, which introduced new features such as seasons corresponding to those in the real world, and expanded the Go Battle League from 10 ranks to 24.

Niantic and Pokemon Go have yet to announce when the Routes feature will officially launch.
