A new Spotify update expands the potential of music recommendations for both free and premium users of the platform. Now, in addition to famous Daily Mixes, the streaming service also offers three other categories of tracks selected and personalized according to each person's taste. As always, the Spotify continues to create features to improve the experience of its users.

“Spotify Mixes”, another option from “Made For You”

The feature, called “Spotify Mixes,” is located below the “Made For You” section, in the search field. The algorithm uses three filters to create personalized suggestions: musical genres, artists, and decades. A quick look at the three filters and you’ll notice that, unlike “New This Week,” the mixes already include some previously liked songs here. This is probably to ensure that the user listens to previously approved songs on shuffle.

In the music genres section, Spotify mixes will make suggestions and groupings based on what you’ve been listening to most recently. In the Blues mix, for example, most of the suggested songs had already been downloaded. On the other hand, the Jazz mix not only had fewer suggestions, but also included songs outside the genre – for example, blues, chill-out and electro swing. Apparently, the filter aims to offer an “approximate experience” of the emotions associated with those songs.

Artist mixes aren’t much different from Spotify’s “radio” mixes. The filter selects the most popular songs from a few related artists to include in the playlist, along with other tracks and even covers. The experience is much more specific, as only five or six different artists appear in the selection.

Filter by decade is very eclectic

On the other hand, the decade filter is the most comprehensive of all. In a single 90s playlist, for example, Spotify mixes grouped together Outkast, Ozzy Osborne, Incubus, Alice in Chains and Eminem. It seems that the app still uses the user's favorite musical genres, but suggests related releases and artists from the same era instead.
