Expectations were already high for Xiaomi's event, which takes place next Monday, March 29, at 19:30 pm China time (which, with an 11-hour time difference, will fall at 8:30 am here). At a time when we are suffering from a processor shortage, Xiaomi has just hinted that it is developing its own processor.
This is not the first time. In 2017, Xiaomi introduced the Surge S1, aimed at the most affordable devices. But it did not go very far. On the Chinese social network Weibo, the company posted a teaser about a small proprietary chip for March 29th and, at the end of the text in the post, he wrote “my heart surged”. Surge means a sudden increase of something – an outbreak. And it also indicates that Xiaomi’s new processor could be a sequel to its first.
S1 appears on Xiaomi Mi 5C
The company's 2017 chipset was inserted into the Xiaomi Mi 5C smartphone and was a full-fledged processor. To develop a new device with such high properties, the manufacturer would need a lot of effort, even more so in a scenario with large companies consolidated as leaders in this market. Judging by the teaser and the apparent humility with which the company Xiaomi presents its future processor, we may be facing something more modest, a secondary processor to work alongside a standard SoC.
Google is taking a similar approach with its Pixel Neural Core and Pixel Visual Core, powering machine learning and image processing alongside a Qualcomm SoC. In other words, a custom chip from Xiaomi could do the job, allowing a Snapdragon 800-series processor to handle everything else inside a device.

Finally, in a few days, we will be faced with official announcements regarding not only the probable new Surge, but also much-awaited releases from Xiaomi. At its event, we will have several launches, such as the Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra and the Xiaomi Mi 11 Pro, in addition to the enigmatic Mi Mix, the manufacturer's foldable flagship.
