Apparently, the Discord acquisition will actually be made by Microsoft. Bill Gates' company is in advanced negotiations to acquire the low-latency chat server application for at least US$ 10 billion.
According to industry insiders, Microsoft could conclude negotiations as early as April. Initially favored by gamers, forums and subreddits, Discord has become very popular since the pandemic, allowing large groups to contact each other with relative stability.
The expectation is that the service will be used to increase Gates's competitiveness against Zoom and Meet. Although Microsoft Teams has considerable market adoption, Skype, a specific IP communications application, is not doing very well in this regard.
With around 140 million monthly users, Discord has raised around $100 million in revenue from its paid services. In addition to Microsoft and other companies entering the race for an acquisition, there is a possibility that the app will go public.
Compliant previously posted, the negotiation between Microsoft and Discord is being led by Phil Spencer, head of the Xbox division, who also recently coordinated the acquisition of ZeniMax Media, the owner of Bethesda, for $7,5 billion. The company was also interested in acquiring TikTok in the middle of last year, but relations were cut after Donald Trump threatened to ban the app and situation to be left aside.
