The rumor that the new foldable Apple may have advanced hinges could be real, according to a new patent. A new system of gears to manage how the phone folds will make the device less fragile and more durable.
Products like Samsung's Galaxy Fold have shown that it is a huge challenge to make a folding durable for long-term use. One of the difficulties involves how to manage the folding and unfolding of the screen. A simple hinge mechanism, like the one on the Galaxy Fold, could allow a folding mechanism to work, but it would not allow the user of the device to support the screen in different positions or control the speed of the process.
Second a patent granted to Apple by the USPTO (United States Patent and Trademark Office) last Tuesday (23/03), entitled “Folding Electronic Devices with Geared Hinges”, the brand tries to solve the recurring problem of other devices with a support mechanism for the foldable.
A Apple want a maximum strength folding
The patent of the Apple showed some systems of gears that can be used in the folding device. See below:

Mechanism for external screens
The gears of the future foldable iPhone maintain support structures while the device is being opened or folded. When moving it, it would be possible to support the screen during the maneuver and fold the screens independently.
Even if the application of these systems is predictably done on iPhones or iPads, the Apple does not rule out the possibility of transferring the resource to other devices in the ecosystem that may benefit.
Those responsible for the new technology are Kai Wang, Zhiyong Cedric Xia and Michael B. Wittenberg, according to license.
