Unfortunately, the world is entering the second year of the Covid-19 pandemic, and much of the world is receiving vaccines and ensuring a possible return to normality by 2022, or even this year, depending on the country. Despite this, the arrival of the vaccines was also accompanied by a disinformation campaign. As a way to prevent the spread of fake news about the vaccine, Instagram announced today on its official blog which is launching the Covid-19 Information Center.

The new feature consists of a space in the app where users can find information about the pandemic from official health entities. Users from the US, UK, France, Germany, India and Chile can find more detailed information about the pandemic situation in their region. They will also be able to find out how the vaccination process is going, what phase the country is in and who can already be immunized.

With today's update, the app will implement a notification at the top of the photo feed with a button to access the Covid-19 Information Center. Instagram also said it is working to ensure that more important information about the pandemic will reach the app in the coming weeks. In addition, the app will also gain a vaccination sticker that will give access to the center.

Tougher actions

In times of a pandemic and misinformation, providing reliable sources is not enough. Therefore, Instagram is also strengthening its rules to combat fake news and will remove all content that violates its policy on vaccines and Covid-19. The action follows the same direction as Twitter, which is banning users who spread false information about the health crisis.

In conclusion, posts that are not refuted by health experts will receive a label with general information about the pandemic. This other label will provide access to publications from the WHO and the Ministry of Health. In addition, they will be improved in the coming weeks to provide more context according to the publication.
