Disney Plus is very close to establishing a significant brand. The streaming service launched on the global market approximately a year and a half ago, and which arrived in Brazil in November of last year, has 100 million subscribers. The company revealed that it had reached 94,9 million on January 2, almost three years ahead of the company's planning.

Disney had been expecting to reach 90 million subscribers by mid-2024. Now, with the news of the surprising subscriber growth, the new projection for Disney Plus is to reach a number between 230 and 260 million within the next two years. It may seem ambitious, but the jump recorded just from December to January shows that the goal is achievable.

The service saw an increase of 8 million customers in just one month, as data released on December 2 indicated that Disney's streaming service had 86,8 million users. For comparison purposes, Netflix recorded, at the end of last year, 204 Millions Subscribers, 13 years after its launch in the United States. That means Disney Plus has gained nearly half the subscribers of its rival in a tenth of the time.

Reasons

Disney Plus' meteoric growth in subscribers was fueled in December by the release of Pixar's animated series Soul, exclusively for the streaming platform. Other titles also shown exclusively on Disney's service, such as The Mandalorian and WandaVision, contributed to an increase of almost 10 million subscribers to Disney Plus in the period, according to an analysis by the Nielsen Institute.

A next bet The company's plan to continue boosting Disney Plus and gaining more and more subscribers is the launch of Star, starting on February 23. Disney's international general entertainment service, similar to Hulu, will be integrated into Disney Plus (except in Latin America). Christine McCarthy, the company's CFO, said that the company is "very pleased" with the numbers, but that from now on, it will release reports on a quarterly basis.

In Brazil, Disney Plus subscriptions can be made in two ways: monthly, for R$27,90, or annually. In this second option, the streaming service is on sale, going for R$279,90, instead of the full price, which is R$334. The constant growth in the number of subscribers, however, could cause the price of the service to increase, as recently happened with rival Netflix.
