Created with a free-to-use model with ads in the feed, Twitter may soon change that. It is expected to include paid content through subscription, according to information gathered by Bloomberg.
The problem with the current model, it seems, is that it isn’t growing as fast as its rivals. As such, investors may be pushing Twitter to open up new avenues for monetization. According to the report, there are a few alternatives to the social network’s monetization model. None of them, however, seem to be intended to make Twitter entirely paid.
It would be another premium version. A subscription content format. Another alternative is a donation-based model, similar to what already happens on platforms like YouTube e Twitch. In it, users could make small donations to content producers and, in exchange, would have access to some exclusive content.
Tweetdeck paid?
On the other hand, it is possible that Twitter's new monetization model will not exactly involve access to exclusive content for subscribers or donors. The popular TweetDeck tool, which allows you to schedule and monitor tweets and is widely used by companies, could become paid as a way to increase revenue.
Another alternative is to include paid features on Twitter itself. For example, buttons to undo sending a tweet, more customization tools for the profile or even the requested button to edit tweets. The latter, in fact, is the most frequent complaint among users of the app since its founding in 2007.
The subscription model seems the most likely. Twitter’s head of revenue products Bruce Falck said in a note that “while we [Twitter executives] are excited about the potential [of a subscription model], it’s important to be clear that we are just beginning to explore the idea and do not expect any new models to be significantly profitable in 2021.”
