LG's future in the smartphone market is still so uncertain as the launch of the futuristic LG Rollable, the company's extendable screen cell phone. However, this Tuesday (09/02), the brand's possible revolutionary project revealed the presence of a secondary screen, something that was unknown until now. The most recent license published on the website LetsGoDigital showed new design details, which were registered with CNIPA (China National Intellectual Property Administration).
What would be the function of this extra screen? According to the latest leaked information, it would be to serve as a viewfinder for selfies taken with the main camera. This could be deduced because there is no visible camera or button on the front of the device. There is only a circle at the top, making up the structure of the hinge that will move the extendable screen in and out of the smartphone.

The secondary screen, therefore, would arrive to fill a gap in the project that everyone was aware of until now, and which was even part of LG's presentation during CES 2021, including, to a little teaser, just 15 seconds long. The film, however, did not give any further details about the LG Rollable, and served only to pique the curiosity and imagination of those who like futuristic designs.
The future of LG
The new information about the LG Rollable, especially about the secondary screen, does not guarantee that the phone that turns into a tablet will ever come to fruition or even that the company has decided to remain in the competitive cell phone market. As LG CEO Kwon Bong-Seok had already said, while nothing is defined, the projects will continue. In a recent interview with Korea Herald, the executive was blunt when asked about the extendable cell phone itself. According to him, LG “has not defined plans for the launch and is open to all possibilities”.
The same ambiguous positioning was presented to the Photo Arena website, in an official statement sent as a response about the company's future and new projects. “LG Electronics management is committed to making any necessary decisions to solve its mobile business challenges in 2021. To date, nothing has been finalized,” the company summarized, keeping the mystery in the air.
The main challenge for the official launch of the LG Rollable is not just figuring out how to make the extendable system or secondary screen work perfectly, but also the costs of the project. On Tuesday, doubts about the viability of the project were once again raised, remembering that models such as the LG Velvet and LG Wing did not achieve the expected results. Sales below expectations contributed to LG having accumulated 23 consecutive quarters of losses in the segment.
The LG Rollable, a project that could point to the future of smartphone design, may be both the salvation and the anchor of LG's mobile division, but that if it comes out of the paper.
