YouTube is testing a new button on its interface that lets you record short videos, in the same style as TikTok. A new “Create” icon was spotted today by users of the video platform in India – the country in which the TikTok has been permanently banned.

The new feature allows the user to select excerpts of up to fifteen minutes of the running video to create a Story – which, On YouTube, it's called “Shorts”. By pressing the button, the user will be able to record a short film using the selected audio clip in the background. Apparently, the feature only works with clips from music videos.

Once recorded, the user can still modify other aspects of the footage, such as the music section, select another clip, or even another track from the YouTube music catalog. Once finished, it is possible to upload the video to the Shorts section of the channel, or save it to upload at another time (or another place).

It's worth noting that, because it works specifically with music videos, Shorts won't appear in countries that have licensing restrictions for certain songs. So far, there are no plans to release YouTube Shorts here, or in other regions of the world.

YouTube's new button is especially interesting considering that the short video format increases retention time on the platform. Following the ban of TikTok in India by data exposure, a gap has been left there, which makes the country the perfect place for Google's video platform to test the feature for the app's “orphans” there.
