The Facebook announced this Monday (08/02) that will include fake news about vaccines in the platform's automatic ban list. The social network will also take down groups, profiles, ads and pages responsible for repeatedly sharing fake news.

In its development blog, Facebook said it will automatically remove fake news on the topic, such as claims that vaccines cause autism or that they are toxic, for example. The updated list will also include false claims about Covid-19, such as that the coronavirus is a human laboratory product.

The decision is part of an initiative by the social network to combat false information involving not just Covid-19, but also all vaccinations. Although Facebook makes a ostensive patrol when it comes to pandemic, until then had not had any strict control over misinformation about flu in general – dealing with it urgently only when it considered an imminent risk.

Combating misinformation

In addition to automatically banning fake news, Facebook will distribute $120 million in ads to health ministries, NGOs and United Nations agencies to promote vaccination campaigns. The platform will also train marketing professionals at health institutions to create more effective ads.

Finally, Mark Zuckerberg's network will also place links to official institutions in its Covid-19 information center, informing users when they can get vaccinated. Just as it did during the elections, Facebook will also place reminders about vaccination campaigns in the user's region.
