Samsung is willing to shell out $10 billion (or R$53,6 billion) to unseat a TSMC (Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co) and become, within two years at the most, the owner of the largest chip factory in the US. The South Korean company's idea is to set up the facilities in Austin, Texas, in 2021, with effective operation beginning in early 2023.

It is worth mentioning that Samsung already has a facility in Austin, but it does not have the capacity to produce next-generation chips (3nm) using the EUV (extreme ultraviolet lithography) process. The company has two factories capable of producing chips using this new technology, one in Hwaseong and the other in Pyeongtaek, both in South Korea. Building a new unit on American soil would give Samsung the opportunity to face TSMC on better terms.

TSMC is also investing heavily in building a new facility. The world leader in the segment confirmed that it will spend even more money – US$ 12 billion (or R$ 64,3 billion) on a factory in Arizona, which is projected to begin production of the latest generation chips in 2024 (one year after Samsung, theoretically).

What is missing?

according to Bloomberg, Samsung is already well on its way to finalizing the construction of a new chip factory in the United States. The company's American division already purchased land near its current factory in October last year and submitted documents requesting permission to zone the land for industrial development to the responsible agency, Austin City Council.

In addition, the company has also begun to reach out to members of the government of President Joe Biden, Donald Trump's successor. The intention is to strengthen ties as much as possible and, with this, try to outline agreements that allow for the obtaining of tax benefits and other subsidies, in accordance with what American legislation allows.

Samsung Vice Chairman Lee Jae-Young is eager to realize his dream of building a new chip factory in the US, and recently announced that he plans to spend up to $116 billion over the next ten years solely on chip development. The target, of course, is the aforementioned TSMC, today the world market leader.
