All about the best cell phones

Weezer released the music video for “All My Favorite Songs” on Thursday (21/01). The video was made available on YouTube, and looks more like a Google Pixel 5 commercial, with many scenes of the band using the Google smartphone several times.

The video begins with lead singer Rivers Cuomo using the Pixel 5 camera to film the band's recordings. The recordings are then shared online and viewed by other users, who then use their phones as a portal to the band. One of the members even activates the phone's virtual assistant with the phrase: “Hey, Google”. Check out the song below:

Technology in contrast to analog sound

While there's no mention of the smartphone in the video's credits, it's quite possible that Weezer received some incentive from Google to promote the Pixel 5. This wouldn't be the first time, as the group is a longtime partner of the company.

In 2008, Weezer released the music video for “Pork and beans”, which in addition to being released first on YouTube, featured a series of references and appearances by influencers of the time. Interestingly, with the Pixel 5, the company chose a controversial moment to do a double feature.

“All My Favorite Songs” marks the release of the upcoming album “Ok Human,” a project made during the Covid-19 lockdown and which aims to forgo the technology of large studios and use only analog recording instruments and methods from the 1960s and 1970s. In other words, as few computers and software as possible. Does the company want to say that the smartphone is so good that even Weezer’s technological crisis won’t be able to withstand the Google Pixel 5?

“Ok Human” will be available on major streaming platforms on January 29th. The album’s name is also a reference to the classic “Ok Computer”, released by Radiohead in 01, which followed the opposite path, using technology as a premise for the experimentalism of the songs.

Pixel 5 and its history of problems

The marketing disguised in the Weezer music video could be a sign that things are not going well for Google's smartphone. The Pixel 5 was released in October 2020 and suffered from criticism regarding your performance and user reports about screen defects e device buttons.

The company even tried to get around the situation by offering exclusive advantages of other services for users, but it seems that the initiative was not well received. The Pixel 5 Pro, an updated version of the device should hit the market in the coming months.
