After the invasion of the Capitol on 06/01 and the riots on the day of Joe Biden's inauguration, last Wednesday (20/01), the Twitter has now decided to ban several Antifa accounts, with more than 71 thousand accumulated followers.
On the day of the presidential inauguration, extremists marched through some cities and vandalized others, holding up signs saying they did not want Biden, but rather revenge. The largest protest came from Trump supporters, but members of the Antifa movement took to the streets of Seattle on the day of the inauguration and vandalized a historic Starbucks store and burned the American flag. In light of the situation, at least four Antifa-related accounts dating back to 2012 were taken offline for violating the social network's rules.
Twitter's initiative to to ban The accounts sparked protests among Antifa supporters, and Twitter did not respond promptly when asked by the press.
Understand the case
Twitter has been facing problems with Antifa followers, or with opponents infiltrated into the movement, for some time now. In June of last year, a fake account associated with the Antifa movement, but which was actually created by a nationalist group, ended up being banned from Twitter for inciting violence during Black Lives Matter protests, violating the social network's policies.
On the day of Joe Biden's inauguration, new unrest occurred, with protesters marching through Portland and Seattle, vandalizing stores and monuments. The same happened in Oregon, where the Democratic Party headquarters was broken into and vandalized. It is speculated that social media was used to organize the protests, as happened with the US Congress.
What is Antifa?
The movement, whose name comes from Antifascist, is a group of leftist activists who try to combat fascism, racism and the American far right. Former President Donald Trump has even accused Antifa of domestic terrorism, since most of the protests in which the group is involved end in violence and destruction, but without doing the same to their supporters.
Twitter's initiative to ban Antifa-related accounts is part of its commitment to ending fake news and violence, as stated in its internal terms and policies.
