TikTok has updated its platform rules for underage users. The decision was made after a 12-year-old girl sue the social network, in England. She questions the way her data was stored.

According to TikTok, the new rules aim to protect minors by limiting features. Now, by default, accounts of users aged 13 to 15 will be private and only friends will be able to watch and comment on the profile's videos. The accounts will also not appear in content suggestions areas.

Additionally, users will not be able to use Duet mode or other features that allow users to interact with other accounts. They will also not be able to download videos for reposting on other networks. These options will be disabled until users turn 16.

Image crisis

The update seeks to circumvent the image crisis suffered by the application in some countries, demonstrated concern for the safety of its community. In 2020, the company suffered a series of sanctions from the American government and was banned from the United States.

Despite this, TikTok reminds that the fact that the new rules are applied as standard does not prevent minors from using the platform without restrictions. In addition to the changes for teen accounts, in 2020, TikTok also updated the terms of use for children. The platform has added features that allow parents and guardians to have greater control over what their children are consuming. This makes it possible to relate a child account to a common account, in which the user will even choose the suggestions that will be displayed to their children.
