The newly formed union of workers at Google (actually Google's parent company, Alphabet) has taken one of its first steps: accusing its company of collaborating with fascism. The Alphabet Workers Union (AWU) has criticized the company's response to Donald Trump. On Thursday (07/01), they published an open letter in which they called Google's decision not to remove the former president's YouTube account after the attack on the Capitol as shady.

Last Wednesday (06/01), the world witnessed the assault in which the US legislative power headquarters was taken. A group of right-wing extremists attacked the building where Joe Biden's victory was being formalized. Four people died in action. Donald Trump supported the violent groups with social media posts, including a video encouraging the movement that aired on Twitter, Facebook and YouTube. Even when he apparently backtracked and told the attackers to go home, he called his fans “very special” people and said he understood “their pain.”

In response to the tycoon's posts that falsely criticized the American election, incited violence and indirectly promoted a coup, Twitter and Facebook suspended Trump's account. While Google's video network simply deleted the content, claiming it contained false information about the elections. Unhappy with the company's action, the union published its letter expressing its position and pointing out the removal of the content as shady, since it failed to mention that the publication also violated YouTube's rules that prohibit incitement to violence.

Letter against fascism

According to the Google union, the attack on the US Capitol was a tragedy waiting to happen and the result of the promotion of fascism enabled by social media, especially YouTube. In its open letter, the AWU commented on the organization of groups in support of Trump:

We know that social media has endorsed the growing fascist movement in the United States, and we are particularly aware that YouTube, an Alphabet product, has played a central role in the growth of this threat that has received an insufficient response from YouTube executives.

The workers also point out in the text that, over time, they warned company officials about the danger that was being created on the video network. They claim that the warnings were ignored or received concessions and this resulted in suicides, mass murders, violence around the world and the attack on the Capitol as an attempted coup.

Contacted by American news channel CNBC, the company has not presented a position or response to the Google union's allegations that the company is aiding fascism. There is a possibility that the silence will remain, as the AWU was formed on Monday (04/01) and has 400 members, which prevents it from being registered with the competent body and from being recognized by the company.
