The world's largest manufacturer may be planning to bring the future to its smartphones. The Samsung has just filed a patent for an under-screen camera. Rumors indicate that the The company has been working on developing this technology for some time now. and now the feature may be close to hitting the market.

A patent application was filed by the company with the United States Patent and Trademark Office in May 2020, but the publication only took place on December 31 of the same year. The document suggests a device with a full-screen display, without any notch or hole for the sensor to “come out” (as we have already seen in some models such as the Galaxy A80). This would be possible thanks to an under-screen camera system that Samsung is already in an advanced stage of production.

How does it work?

The patent is called “Display Device” and shows a screen divided into two parts. The first is the main screen, with conventional technology. The second, where the selfie camera should be, is small and works as a cutout in the upper part of the device.

In the space where the camera would be hidden, the display has a higher light transmission, which can allow the lens to record photos and videos without losing much quality. The text registered indicates three devices placed in this part of the screen: a selfie camera, a flash and a sensor.

It is not yet possible to know what type of sensor this is, but it is likely to be an infrared sensor, to help calculate the distance of the photographed object based on the intensity of the reflected light.

Both parts of the screen are connected and work fully integrated. The only detail is that the resolution of the second part, where Samsung's under-screen camera is located, should be a little lower than normal.

Closer than it seems

The new ones Galaxy S21 will be launched next week, and will have a conventional selfie camera. The South Korean company should test the feature on other models before implementing it on its top-of-the-line model. Rumors indicate that this would be the responsibility of the next model in the Galaxy Note line (which was even considered to be discontinued) or even the Galaxy Fold 3.

A new patent for something that already exists makes sense. Getting light to pass through a luminous screen without losing quality is a challenge. The technology sounds futuristic, but in reality, impression is not the best. O ZTE Axon 20 5G It was the first smartphone launched with a camera under the screen, but the system was not well received. Users reported blurry and blurry images, with quality well below expectations.

Now we just have to wait and see how the under-screen camera feature will behave on Samsung devices. If it works, it could be a huge revolution in the world of smartphones, which could be “done” on the front of notebooks.
