O Snapchat joined Twitter and Facebook in banning Donald Trump's account after supporters of the (still) president of the United States invaded the Capitol and caused a riot with one death on the afternoon of last Wednesday (6). Social media was the president's main tool to incite his followers in the demonstrations, which had a tragic end, at least one person died during the protests.

In June of last year, the app had already stopped showing the president's account in its discovery section. Now, Trump has been banned from Snapchat. "We can confirm that earlier today we blocked President Trump's account on the platform," a spokesperson for the app told TNW.

Twitter Ban

The first social network to ban the president was Twitter. platform flagged three tweets as offensive during the invasion of Congress by neo-fascist protesters. Trump will be suspended from Twitter for at least 12 hours.

Twitter's statement reads: "As a result of the unprecedented and violent event in Washington, DC, we are demanding the removal of three Tweets from @realDonaldTrump that were posted today as repeated and serious violations of our Civic Integrity policy."

According to Twitter, Trump's account will remain locked for at least 12 hours until the posts are deleted. The company also stated that future violations could "result in the permanent suspension of the @realDonaldTrump account." The action on Trump's accounts was followed by Facebook and Snapchat.

Facebook Actions

Hours after removing from its platform and Instagram a video of Trump directed at supporters, as well as his subsequent post about alleged fraud in the presidential election result, the Facebook denounced the action and announced new updates to its content moderation policy.

The statement was made in a company publication called “Our Response to Violence in Washington.” The letter was signed by Guy Rosen, Facebook’s vice president of integrity, and Monika Bickert, vice president of Global Policy Management.

So far, Snapchat, Facebook and Twitter have announced at least partial blocking of Trump's accounts. The certification of Joe Biden's victory in the US elections was completed during the early hours of the morning, after protesters were removed from the Capitol.
