The CEO of Google, Sundar Pichai, has decided to take a stand and condemned the violent protests at the US Capitol as “the antithesis of democracy.” According to an email sent to the company’s employees, “free and safe elections and the peaceful resolution of our differences are fundamental to a functioning democracy. The United States has a long and proud history of doing so. The lawlessness and violence that occurred at the Capitol today is the antithesis of democracy, and we strongly condemn it.”

Pichai's stance came after supporters of the President Donald Trump violently invaded the US Capitol on Wednesday, 6. Google's CEO also said that the scenes of the protests are “shocking and frightening for all of us”. Protesters are part of the “March for Trump”, which aims to protest against the validation of Joe Biden's victory in the US presidential race, and caused a furor by storming the Capitol building. Lawmakers and reporters had to take shelter in offices before being evacuated. Google's CEO also said that all employees had to check in, and the company would update each of them if any extra precautionary measures were needed due to the protests at the Capitol.

What's more, Google has come under fire for allowing videos filled with misinformation about the election to spread on YouTube. So, the company said it took down a video of the president Trump, who uploaded this Wednesday, 6, about the attack on the US Capitol, in which he said that the election had been “stolen”.

"Hello everybody,

The scenes in Washington DC today are shocking and frightening to all of us. To begin with, we are checking in with our employees to ensure they are safe. We are monitoring the situation and will update affected employees if we take any additional precautions that affect offices or buildings.

Free and secure elections and the peaceful resolution of our differences are fundamental to a functioning democracy. The United States has a long and proud history of doing so. The lawlessness and violence that occurred at the Capitol today are the antithesis of democracy, and we condemn it in the strongest terms.

We’ll continue to provide updates as needed. In the meantime, prioritize your health and well-being by checking in with your support systems—however you define them—and leaning on the Google Community. If you’re looking for extra connection or support, these resources are a good place to start.

Please take good care of yourselves and others.”

A Google spokesperson confirmed the email was authentic but declined to comment further.
