Qualcomm announced today (04/01) its new Snapdragon 480 5G processor, designed for entry-level mobile phones and smartphones. This is the first 4-series processor to have implemented 5G mobile networking. The Snapdragon 480 5G modem offers multi-gigabit 5G connectivity in the mmWave and all available frequencies below 6 GHz.
In addition to 5G, the processor is also prepared for Wi-Fi 6, reaching speeds of up to 9,6 Gbps. These two features of the Snapdragon 480 5G modem are very interesting for the popularization of broadband, as it is a processor used for low-cost smartphones. Thus, more people will be able to have access to high-quality video calls in high definition and without interruptions, not to mention downloads and uploads, which will also be much faster.
Company promises 100% greater performance compared to previous chip
The new chip is based on an 8nm manufacturing process and features eight Kyro 460 cores that can run at up to 2 GHz. According to Qualcomm, the processing power of the Snapdragon 480 5G is 100% higher than the previous release, the Snapdragon 460.
And the announcement didn't stop there. The 480 5G's GPU (graphics processor) is the Adreno 619. The company also announced that performance for vector calculations is also 100% higher than the previous GPU, the Adreno 610.
In addition, the Snapdragon 480 5G also supports displays with a refresh rate of up to 120 Hz, which makes movies and games with more fluid motion. The Qualcomm Spectra 345 image signal processor is another evolution. With it, it is possible to have a triple rear camera, with a 64 MP main camera.
So, we are starting to find details that until now were only present in the top of the range. This is undoubtedly great news, because those who cannot afford to pay so much for a device will also be able to have a cell phone with great performance. But, we will keep an eye on it and wait for the first smartphones equipped with the Snapdragon 480 5G to check the performance.
