Donald Trump has not yet admitted defeat to Joe Biden in the US elections. But Twitter, the social network on which the current president acquired much of his controversies, disagrees.

Since the vote took place on November 3, Twitter had already marked several posts in which Trump claimed to be the winner as “controversial,” but the warning implemented by the platform did not mention Joe Biden. Now, after the Electoral College vote, which once again confirmed Biden as winner, Twitter is placing the following disclaimer on posts by Trump himself: “Election officials have certified Joe Biden as the winner of the U.S. presidential election.”

Whenever Trump claims he won the election, or says he was cheated out of the result, Twitter places that clarifying message in red, even more prominently than before, when “suspicion” warnings appeared in blue.

Accusations without proof

The tool was launched during the US elections and aims to reduce the spread of fake news during the election. In 2016, when Trump was elected, several social networks were accused of not having policies to combat fake news more actively.

Trump has been claiming, without presenting evidence, that several frauds occurred in the election. The Republican filed lawsuits in several US courts, but was unable to take any of the lawsuits forward.

The current president's situation became even more complicated after Biden's victory was confirmed by the Electoral College. Even Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, a strong ally of Trump who had been ignoring the result, congratulated Biden on being elected. On January 6, Congress is expected to once again make the result official. According to the confusing American electoral system, this is the last step before Biden's inauguration, scheduled for the 20th of next month.
