Instagram has added support for a great new feature Apple. It is the format ProRaw, a kind of middle ground between the iPhone's HEIC format and the RAW format available on professional cameras. With ProRaw, you can have greater control with the iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max cameras when editing the colors, white balance and exposure of an image.

Just like we quote here, ProRAW support on iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max was included with iOS 14.3 released by Apple. The ProRAW format can be used when the cameras of both models are in Smart HDR, Deep Fusion or Night mode. And is it possible to notice a difference in ProRAW photos taken with the new Pro models of the iPhone 12 line? According to tests carried out by CNet e GSMArena, the answer is yes.

New feature announced in a tweet from an Instagram developer

The news that the new iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max will support ProRaw photos on Instagram was shared in a tweet by Tim Johnsen, one of Instagram's developers. In the message, he also explained that ProRAW photos in DNG format cannot be edited on Instagram, because there are no editing tools in the app.

Secret is in the editing

What the support will do is convert the ProRAW DNG format to JPEG, which is the setting shown on Instagram. The photos can then be edited in the Photos app. Apple, or in a third-party application. ProRAW images are usually large and can reach around 25 MB. But if the user wants to get the most out of the format, the developer recommends using specific applications to edit ProRAW images before uploading them. He suggested using Darkroom. Then Instagram will compress the image and convert it to JPG.

This image format is very interesting for more experienced photographers, who usually prefer to shoot in RAW, as they don't get along very well with the automation allowed by their devices. The important thing in these cases is that the images can be opened in editing software, where the photographer can manually adjust a multitude of parameters, until the photo is perfect, according to their objective.
