It's official: Discord has enabled, as of this Wednesday (16/12), the function of sharing screens on cell phones for Android and iOS users. The feature was available since last month, but only in beta version.
Just like in the app and the web version, screen sharing allows users to broadcast their smartphone screen to a group of friends. In interview with TechCrunch, the creators of Discord explained that the idea was to make the function work well especially when there was a lot of movement on the screen. That is, to minimize latency and frame transmission issues when streaming games and watching videos on YouTube or TikTok.
Discord has been allowing screen sharing on PCs since 2017, when it launched the feature alongside video chat. On Android and iOS, screen sharing can be broadcast simultaneously to up to 50 viewers, with no limit on how many users can perform the operation in the same channel.
Discord has gained traction in the video calling and messaging app scene since it became a standard communication app for gamers. In recent years, the app has also gained prominence in other areas, such as book clubs and companies with workspaces restricted to the online environment.
The main purpose of this new feature, according to Discord, is to provide social dynamics for these groups. This is very important in times of pandemic, where these meetings are (or should be) restricted to “virtual spaces”. Unfortunately, only 20% of Discord users have access to the screen sharing function on Android and iOS initially. However, the company promises that the feature will be available to everyone by the end of Thursday (17/12).
