Google has just announced, in a post on its blog, which intends to implement 3D photos in Google Photos, its photo app. The name chosen by the company for this new function was cinematic photo, due to its depth effect.
According to the company, the 3D photos of the Google Photos will be produced through artificial intelligence. Google's AI will be able to calculate the depth of the image and, from that, create a 3D photo. In other words, it doesn't matter whether the photo has depth information stored in it or not.
The AI is powerful enough to do this transformation from scratch, so you don’t have to worry if your smartphone is lower-end, it will still be able to do this.
Your memories becoming a movie
The name cinematic comes from the fact that the result of this process is an animated image, through a panoramic effect, often used in films in dramatic scenes. It is important to note that this is not a simple zoom, since the objects in the scene move in opposite directions: the focus of the scene moves closer to the camera, while the background moves away.
Additionally, all images of the Google Photos will be transformed into 3D images automatically. In other words, you won't need to keep choosing images to become 3D, the app does it for you and notifies you whenever a new cinematic photo is created.
According to Google, this addition to the Photos app was created to bring back memories from photos in a more vivid and realistic way, so that the user is transported back to the moment in question. Sharing cinematic photos is also easy, as the app can transform them into videos.
This new feature will be coming to Google Photos next month. In the meantime, we can only wonder if Cinematic Photos, which are nothing more than videos, will take up all the available storage space. Especially after Google's decision to end the free unlimited storage of the app.
