Google has finally released the public beta version of the Android 11 system, which was scheduled to be released on June 3rd at the Google I/O launch, but which ended up being postponed.

Android 11 was supposed to be unveiled that day at a virtual event, which ended up being postponed due to protests in the United States. It was released today without an event, but in return Google made it available several videos which show the highlights of the new system. The new features are focused on three pillars: people, control and privacy.

Communication between users

The first pillar deals with communication between users and introduces the Bubbles API, which allows developers to use bubbles for conversations, previously seen in Facebook Messenger. Bubbles can remain visible even when the user leaves the window, which can be very useful for important conversations.

Additionally, chat notifications will appear in a new unified area, which will make it easier to open them in bubbles and create a shortcut to the chat on the home screen. This area will also allow users to schedule a reminder and be notified about a chat at a specific time.

The keyboard also gained new suggestions that are made based on specific contexts. Those who control their smartphone exclusively through voice commands will be pleased to know that Android 11 will understand the context of what is being shown on the screen. In addition, the system will be able to generate captions and access points for accessibility commands.

New media and connected device controls

The system also won new features control buttons located on the power button. Pressing the button for a longer time opens various controls for connected smart home devices such as TVs, lamps, etc.

Media controls have also been reformulated, and now allow you to control streams that are running on your smartphone or that are running remotely. In addition, when the user resumes playback, they return to where they left off.

Privacy

The new privacy features will allow users to have greater control over app permissions for using the camera, microphone, or location. From now on, app permissions will have the option to be authorized on a per-use basis. Additionally, if users do not use the app for a period of time, permissions can be automatically reset.

Facilities for developers

Finally, we have a few features that are designed to make developers’ lives easier in Android Studio 4.1 Beta and 4.2 Canary. The Google Play Console has also been redesigned, with 12 new modules added to improve its privacy, security, and consistency.

Beta is now available for Pixel smartphones

Android 11 can now be downloaded on Google's Pixel smartphones, starting with the Pixel 2, but it will soon be available on other smartphones as well.
