MIUI 12

Xiaomi presented today together with the We are 10 Youth Edition its new MIUI 12 interface for Android 10, which can be installed on several smartphones from the Mi and Redmi lines. The interface has a new night mode that automatically darkens the wallpaper and many other improvements.

The visuals are more flatter, and MIUI 12 has new animations, such as the wallpapers. They show the Earth, Moon and Mars seen from space, with a zoom that quickly approaches when the user unlocks the smartphone. Likewise, the system supports dynamic fonts, like iOS.

The multitasking section now shows floating windows and notifications, and promises to be more intuitive for the user. Navigation gestures now work like those in Android 10.

New security features

The new interface also features better privacy controls. There are three main features: Flare, Barbed Wire, and Mask System.

Flare shows whether an app is using the user’s microphone or location in the background. Barbed Wire allows access to the location, microphone, or camera only once every time, or denies the request. This allows you to grant permissions to apps only when necessary, or, for example, prohibit the use of cameras in the background.

The Mask System prevents apps from accessing contacts, calendar, call logs and even the smartphone's IMEI. As the name suggests, it also allows the user to create a visual identity to fool apps that are trying to obtain their data and information.

All behaviors of each app are recorded, and you can check what is being used and what is not. Any risky or suspicious behavior is immediately banned by the MIUI 12 interface. All privacy settings can be adjusted from one place.

Other news

Another new feature is the AI-powered call function, which automatically transcribes calls. In addition, this feature also suggests responses, which can be very useful for people with hearing difficulties.

The Mi Health app was also introduced, and can track your movements and physical activity using AI, just by leaving your smartphone in your pocket. In addition, the app can monitor your sleep without the need for other devices, just by placing your smartphone under your pillow at bedtime.

Another new feature was the inclusion of Xiaomi themes from the last 10 years, something that may please more nostalgic users.

The beta version is already being tested in China, but the new interface is expected to be officially launched in June.

The first to receive the new interface will be the Mi 10, Mi 10 Pro, Mi 10 Youth Edition, Mi 9 Pro 5G, Mi 9 Explorer Edition, Mi 9, Redmi K30 Pro, Redmi K30 Pro Zoom Edition, Redmi K30 5G, Redmi K30, Redmi K20, Redmi K20 Pro and Redmi K20 Pro Premium Edition.
