Galaxy XCover FieldPro

Samsung has announced its Galaxy XCover FieldPro rugged smartphone, which is now on sale in the United States. It has passed all 21 tests of the MIL-STD-810G military-grade ruggedness standard, and it also lets you talk directly to another device as if it were a walkie-talkie over the FirstNet network.

The device is also waterproof with IP68 certification. The screen is 5,1 inches with a resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixels. The battery is removable, and has 4500 mAh.

The front camera is 8 megapixels and the rear camera is 12 megapixels, with 4K video recording, but inside, the specifications are very modest, with an Exynos 9810 processor, 4 GB of RAM, 64 GB of capacity and a slot for microSD cards of up to 512 GB.

With physical buttons designed for use with gloves, it appears to have been tailor-made for use by US government agencies. The removable battery may seem dated, but in practice it means the user will never be without the device.

The operating system, Android Oreo, was released about two years ago. The device is 14,2 mm thick and weighs 256 grams. Its price is US$ 1104 (in Brazil), and it is available for pre-order with delivery scheduled for April 14.
