Despite the forced interruption caused by the new coronavirus pandemic, Foxconn has already reopened its factories in China and is producing again, which makes it possible to launch the iPhone 5G on schedule.
Today, Alex Yang, investor relations manager at Hon Hai Precision Inc. (which owns Foxconn), reassured its customers and investors by saying. He said that despite the delay caused by the factory closure in February, this should not affect the 5G smartphone launches scheduled for this year.
The Foxconn factory that assembles iPhones is known as “iPhone City” and is located in Zhengzhou, Henan province. The information is in line with what was said in last week by sources linked to suppliers of the Apple, that production of the new 5G iPhones would not be delayed.
The executive's statement makes it more likely that the new 5G iPhone will arrive in September of this year as planned, but nothing is guaranteed. In addition to Foxconn, Apple reports hundreds of suppliers to deliver the necessary components.
Yang added: “We and our customer engineers are trying to get back on track, even though we lost a few days due to the travel ban. There is an opportunity and a possibility that we can get there.”
A new delay is still a possibility
Production line testing is expected to begin in June, with new iPhones expected to be manufactured from August. However, further delays could still occur if factories have to be closed again.
Yang added that “if there is a further delay in the coming weeks or months, then we will probably have to reconsider the release date. There is still that chance.”
Since the plant was cleared to open, Foxconn has taken several steps to meet demand. For example, the company has offered bonuses to workers and said it has reached the number of temporary workers it needs ahead of its end-of-March target, according to information from Bloomberg.
In addition to the iPhone 5G, the Apple should soon launch the new iPhone 9, or iPhone SE 2, as revealed by leakage of some cases at Best Buy the other day. Some sources say the new entry-level iPhone would arrive on April 15th.
